All of us understand the importance of a good education, and this is one of the reasons why many of us will help to pay the fees of the children of the people who work for us. These could be our driver’s kids, our maidservant’s kids, and the office clerk’s kids, because we want them to get a good education so that they will have a brighter future.
We know that schools can be expensive, and we’re happy to subsidise this or help them buy the books they need in order to study well. But the reality is that this is often not very helpful in the long run, because while you can pay for their going to school, all this means is that they attend school, but this doesn’t mean that they get an education; forget about learning anything.
This is partly because our schooling system is so badly designed. It’s all about cramming to get high marks in an exam by studying an outdated curriculum. School is boring, teachers aren’t engaged, and kids get lost in overcrowded classrooms. This is why these kids are not very interested in studying, as a result of which they don’t do well in school. This makes their inferiority complex even worse! They come from underprivileged backgrounds, don’t have too many books at home to read, and don’t have a home environment that is student-friendly, which means the odds are stacked against them, and doing badly in school just makes a bad situation even worse for them. Thus, even though your intentions may be very good, they don’t achieve the desired outcome, so a lot of the money just gets wasted because the kids may attend school, but that doesn’t mean that they’re getting an education. There is a big gap between education and learning, and all these kids often end up getting C grades and D grades, partly because English is not their first language, their parents aren’t very well educated, and because they have so many household chores to do.
We sometimes try to supplement this by paying for tuition classes for these kids because we can see that they’re extremely bright and eager to learn, but this doesn’t help either because these coaching classes are all part of the same broken education system.
Here’s a solution!
Instead of just paying their school fees to provide them with a sub-par education, gift them a world-class education by gifting them a complete PC – with a keyboard, mouse, monitor, webcam and headphones ! This is actually much cheaper, given the fact that a Selligion PC at www.selligion.com just costs Rs. 10,000/-. This is a specially subsidised introductory price for a short time. And more importantly, now that they have a PC at home, they will be able to understand whatever they’re being taught in school (using the flipped classroom model) and can clear their doubts by watching videos online from www.khanacademy.org, www.missiongyan.com, www.learnohub.com, and www.magnetbrains.com.
This will allow them to clear their doubts, so they will be more confident about appearing for exams and scoring well. Their street smarts combined with academic opportunities mean they can truly shine! The PC will help their self-confidence levels increase because they can explore a lot of additional stuff beyond the curriculum, such as how to code or how to learn English. They can learn what interests them, rather than being forced to learn what someone else wants them to learn. And the amount that they can learn at home for themselves on a PC is incredible! You are effectively gifting them a “School-in-a-Box” which will help them compete and collaborate !
This will have a ripple effect because then they can invite their friends over, and when friends learn together as a group, because of peer-to-peer learning, the learning is a lot stickier and lasts longer. And when they start doing better in exams, their self-confidence increases, and their ability to become lifelong self-directed learners improves as well.
They can use their digital skills to start earning money by doing projects; and creating a personal digital brand for themselves by publishing their own website, which will set them up for life-long success.
Next time, if you do want to gift an education to a kid, then don’t just pay for school fees, because this is very shortsighted and doesn’t really help in the long run. Gift them an educational PC instead! Don’t just give them a fish – teach them how to fish ! Click here to buy your own PC.
